I have posted in other threads about this gun, but as not wanting to be all over the board I am starting a new thread. I just picked up what I believed to be a PA-63 in 9mm Short. After asking Norm and some of the others about it I am not so sure what it really is. Is this a rare bird? Norm has stated that he did not believe that the PA-63 was made in 9mm Short. I have never seen one either, but I am no expert. It is marked Cal.

9mm SHORT PA-63 AP9 Made by FEG HUNGARY. The s/n is matching on the frame and slide. The gun is totally original and does not look to have been modified in any way. The barrel is marked 9mm SHORT. Thanks, You were right: Quoted from Makarov.com FEG AP9 Imported by Century International Arms of St. Albans, VT, the AP9 is a commercial.380 ACP version of the PA-63 service pistol, with the same white alloy frame and two-tone appearance. In general, the AP9 shares the same strength and weaknesses of the Walther PP/PPK pistols.
Its most obvious drawback is a very heavy double-action trigger pull. The magazine release is located just below the slide at the front of the grip, rather than behind the trigger guard.
As a result, the empty magazine protrudes 1/8 of an inch from the bottom of the grip instead of smoothly ejecting. Despite a very heavy double-action first shot, the AP9 test-fired with surprising accuracy. One offhand group, using Federal 95-grain FMJ, placed five shots in a tiny 1.4-inch pattern; and a 50-foot group placed within an incredibly small 1.7-inch pattern. That was, however, after a first shot, fired double-action, had landed some 2 1/2 inches away from the point of aim. The four remaining shots, all single action, were fired at the first bullet hole. The AP9 is a good.380-caliber pistol that can be purchased for much less than any Walther on the market. End I still however wonder why this pistol is stamped with both model numbers fritzhund.
Hi Folks, I'm the happy owner of a PA-63 in 9MM Mak. I've read a bunch on this pistol since I bought it last year. I found the web site which described the proof marks fairly well. Now having said the above, My understanding is this model pistol was produced from 1963 on, hence the model name PA-63.
I've read varying accounts of these being made from the late 1950's through the 1990's. My pistol appears to have an acceptance mark from 1958. Unfortunately the mark appears to be a double strike and only half imprinted.
Kinda like maybe the fellow making the mark had too much vodka at lunch. On the Hungariae site the writer mentions some frames were 'rebuilt' and could have stamps dating to 1947. My frame is too nice to be that old if I am understanding the production of these pistols. My gun is bright framed with a blued slide. Honestly, my gun looks to have never been issued.
I've tried to take a clear close photo showing the acceptance marks but my crap camera is being uncooperative. Suggestions on what I am seeing here? I can try to take better photos later in the week. Thanks in advance. Hi Folks, I'm the happy owner of a PA-63 in 9MM Mak. I've read a bunch on this pistol since I bought it last year. I found the web site which described the proof marks fairly well.

Suggestions on what I am seeing here? I can try to take better photos later in the week. Thanks in advance.as an owner of 4 of these at present ( one every where I might need one quickly), I can tell you it is almost my favorite pistol. All are wolff spring equipped and totally reliable if it wasn't for my FEG PJK-9HP browning clone the PA-63 WOULD be my favorite! Now that you mention it, I'd hate to have a frame that was originally an RG-59. I like to shoot my PA-63.
I have owned a RG 59 for quite a few years now and haven't had a problem as of yet. I check the frame regularly when I shoot and I shoot it a lot.
ONLY problem I have with this pistol is the slide cuts the webbing on my hand when fired as I have very large hands. The grip is too short to hold it lower. Download hindi font for ms word 2010 for windows 8. A problem I'll have to live with. Like some others around the site, I have.locating extra mags is almost impossible.
Recoil Spring The recoil spring from makarov.com is pretty cheap, and it works. Quite a few people replace the recoil springs on mil surp Maks in order to make the hotter 100-105 gr loads more comfortable. In the end, I still paid less for my modified PA-63s than a Bulgarian Mak. If I had to do it over again, I would have bought a Mak, instead of another PA-63. I only did it in the first place because the mags are not compatible between the various 9x18 pistols. It seems like the Warsaw Pact might have thought of that. The PA-63 is not an ideal first pistol.
The Makarov isn't exactly ideal either, but it is much better in virtually every respect. The PA-63 really excels as a second (or third or whatever) 9x18 pistol in a collection, or as a spare gun for someone who carries. The size, weight, and finish of the PA-63 means that you can stick it in your shorts, front pocket, or cargo pocket and you are good to go. I wouldn't do that to an EG Mak, becuase they have collector's interest. I don't exaclty worry about my car keys scratching a PA-63.
After you have moved on to bigger and/or better things, you still have a perfectly reliable stash gun. My point is that with a little effort and some modifications, you can make a PA-63 every bit as good as any Mak. At that point, it will definitely have cost you more than a Bulgarian mil surp.
However, I'd like to know where some folks are shopping for Bulgarians, because I seem to be the only person who keeps seeing some REAL DOGS among the cheaper specimens. Seriously, I have seen some pretty rough surplus Maks: burrs, uneven wear at contact points, awful triggers, etc.
The PA-63s seem to be in better condition as a group, since they were basically never used (spent quite a few years riding in holsters, though). Maks are better guns as a group. However, I suspect that a lot of Mak owners who put down PA-63s have never even shot one.
Keeps the prices down for everyone else. FEG, I don't shoot my PA 63 much.what are the symptoms of needing a new recoil spring? I like mine fine, 'cept it hammers the base of my thumb. Flat out HURTS to shoot it & accuracy suffers accordingly. Otherwise, I like it. I had one potentially serious problem with mine. I went to a gun show and was going to trade it towards a CZ 52.
The guy offerred me $80.I figured fair enuf, I want the CZ. Then he discovered that the safety was not working, hammer would fall while safed.
It was news to me! (Yes, BAD on my part!fool me once.) The guy I got it from was also at the show.he didn't miss a beat, took it back and called me the next day to come get it.
He said that the left grip was defective and blocking full action of the safety/decock lever. Marriage certificate serial number location. Made it right for free. BTW, mines not a dual-tone.
It has a black Teflon finish and has had the trigger ligthtened up.
